Gumgae Diary

The writer, In Noh(1566~1623), wrote this diary with details from his captive living in Japan for 2 years to returning to Korea through Beijing after escaping by ship of Myung's delegation. It is the record for about 4 months from February 22 in King Sunjo 32nd year(1599) to June 22 in the same year. Initially, it was the record from the situation captured by Japanese military at Namwon-sung war to returning to hometown; however, the front and final contents were lost, and the rest are currently remained according to Yongsabueuirok and Juwhanrok. After 200 years, it was proved as a fact based on Gumgaerok written by a great effort of his 7대손. Since this diary was damaged and partially lost, it is hard to read all the details, and only general situation is recognizable as following. It begins from February in 1599 when he was restricted within Whachungae(currently Osaka). Right after he was aware of Myung's delegation's arrival, he had a meeting to plan for escape with his companies, Byung San Jin and Won Jing Lee, and finally arrived in Jangju, Bokgun-sung with success of escape. In Jangju, he went to Gunmoon in Bokju located 1400 ri away by guidance of delegation and received a warm welcome from Daesama, Pojungsa, Gunmoonjwayoungsa, Chongbyungjwayoungsa, and Gamchaluhsa. In addition, he gathered with scholars there to introduce Korean culture and share poems and songs. When Su Jae Hong invited him to his house, he composed poems in an eight-sided folding screen. The character of In Noh is Gongjik, and his calling name is Gumgae. He was born in Gaeui-ri, Naju(currently Bukdong-ri, Munpyung-myeun, Naju-si) between his father, Sa Whoi Noh, and his mother with last name of Lee in Jeonju. At his age of 14, he studied by the instruction of Namdang Gwang Un Kim under Yulgok and passed Jinsasi at the age of 17. He went to governments' divisions as Naesusabyuljae at the age of 20 but returned home to support his parents during leave. When Japanese invasion of Korea occurred at his age of 27, he gathered voluntary soldiers and won the victory in Echi and Jinsan under General Yul Kwan, a minister of Gwangju. He also had a great victory in the Hengju War. During Jungyujaeran in 1597, he stayed in Hadong with General Yul Kwan; however, he was chased by Japanese military when he went to see his parents in hometown. In front of enemy's guns and swords, he held his parents tightly to protect them. And the Japanese general was touched by his devotion to his parents and ordered other Japanese soldiers not to kill him as giving him the signed document of "Mulhaehyoja(Do not harm this son with a great devotion to his parents)". After escaped from the urgent situation, he returned to a military camp and kept Palgong-san in Daegu. As Namwon-sung was in danger, he went there to fight as a rescue soldier; however, he was captured by the enemy because of the injury by an arrow. After he was sent to Bangdap-po, the Japanese military walked him off by force through Angol-po, Daema-do, and finally to Eshu-ju. A Japanese general was surprised by his studies and gave preferential treatment, but he was sent to Whachungae after his attempt to escape was found out. It was December at the same year when he returned to Korea through Bukgyung, and he reported to King Sunjo about Japanese situation and plans for revenge. In 1603, the nation awarded him a Sunjungwan as recognizing his contribution and then appointed Sogangjuljae. In King Gojong 20th year(1992), he was granted a posthumous epithet as Jahundaebubyungjopanseogyumji Euigumbu Training Wonsa.
